The result of his study, to be honest and for some of my readers perhaps not wholly surprising, is not that encouraging. 1 This small book allows us to see what in Germany, around 1900, an intellectual with esoteric interests thought of the influence of the Mysteries on early Christianity. The lectures were immediately published under the title Das Christentum als mystische Tatsache und die Mysterien des Altertums. Steiner was only too happy to oblige, and from the 19thof October 1901 to the 26thof April 1902 he gave a weekly address to a mostly theosophical audience on the essence of Christianity and its place in the historical development of humanity. The later founder of anthroposophy had come into contact with a new kind of benefactor, Cay Lorenz Graf von Brockdorff (1844–1921), who had invited him to give regular lectures in his library.
